News that is not new but still is interesting

Dawei, Myanmar
The Dawei Project in Southeastern Myanmar.
It is the project to build a coal generating electricity power plant in Dawei.
Dawei is a town in the land stretch on the Andaman, west of the Thai Peninsula and close to Karnjanburi
Dawei is famous for its
Maungmagan Beach is a popular beach in Myanmar
The largest reclining Buddha in Myanmar
Diversified cultural backgrounds including Mon, Thai, and Karen
Hot water springs and
Delicious fruits.
The objections to the project include
Burma’s national interest, it actually benefits Thailand mainly. It is a 75-25% deal for Myanmar government. Myanmar gets 25% of the revenue but probably a 100% of the headaches Myanmar government lacks the laws to deal with the international trade.
Deficiency of transportation infrastructure, Dawei is practically in the thick forest.
Dawei is prone to flooding.
Ecologically, a coal fired power plant is harmful to the environment. Coa fired power plant usually creates heavy smokes, much debris and land excavation that will do damages to the nature, environment, and cultures.
Inhumanely, about 4,400 households in 16 villages - about 30,000 residents - are needed to be moved out of the project area to other areas, arranged by the Myanmar government. The Karen National Unit KNU and some local residents are refusing to relocate.
There also will be the serious contamination of the cultures.
Burmawas going to be being taken. However it has wised up and halted the project. Kudos to the Myanmar government, now watch out the Chinese. What is the other port that Chinese like you to build?
As Buddha said “Once you ask for anybody else to help you, all in the sudden you become his slave.
Myanmarcan better use Dawei for tourism.
The psychology of economy
Prices are going up in Thailand to the point that the government wants to fix it by using the price control. Hey! The government is powerful and can fix anything by using her might. Is that true? Heck, no.
Nobody is forceful than Mother Nature. The rules of Mother Nature are if things don’t broke don’t fix and the demand and supply. This government is breaking both rules by acting as a populist.
Things don’t broke, don’t fix. Really, Thailand is in much better shape money wise than many other countries, but the government is trying her best to upset the equilibrium by throwing the massive amount of money in, such as trying to raise minimum wage and wages of the biggest group of labors --- the government employees, trying to control the Central Bank to have easy acess to the nation’s reserved money, trying to borrow money for no well studied planning and certificates or documents of needs.
More money but makes more demands on supply, prices go up as the natural result.
The elevated prices if sustained will lead to the inflation.
The inflation if sustained will lead to recession because prices are too high nobody can buy anything.
The government does not have to pour in money into the market yet, by talking about adding money in to the market that will stimulate people to be optimistic and go out and buy and buy: put more demand and supply is believed to become short, so prices go up. It is known as the psychology of economy.
Well, this is the repeated warning from Deja Suthikant, a graduate from the prestigious School of the Hard-knocked and Common Sense.
Unclogging of River Ping in front of my house
The government has to be commended for her efforts to make Ping wider and deeper. This is the right step to restore the nature to prevent floods and to promote better water and more oxygenated air for people. Besides it will beautify the country to promote tourism which comprises 70% of revenues of City of ChiangMai.
Only one criticism I have is that the operation has been unevenly applied. Some lands have been exempted even though it is obvious that they are land growth that belongs to the government. The rumors in the neighborhood have it that the excavators are being paid off not to dig into their lands. See picture.
The day before, I talked to a dear friend for 50 years since we were in medical school together. He alarmed me for accusing environmentalists for alarming other with their stupidity. One of the things he accused them was their conflicting theories. He asked how cutting down forests causing flood and droughts at the same time. I did not explain to him because by having known him for 50 years, I knew it would be the waste of time. However, I will tell you, readers, and I hope it will not be the waste of time.
Cutting down forests and getting rid of trees generate less oxygen and vapors which are produced in leaves. The air is composed of gases, oxygen and nitrogen. Nitrogen is relatively useless for the environment and it is lighter than oxygen therefore it tends to flow higher. So with the decrease of the oxygen, more nitrogen will shift to the ground and so current of the air will go downward toward the earth too causing the relatively less amount of vaporous water to go up in the sky to form clouds and consequently rain. So less trees lead to less clouds and rain and this leads droughts.
Also without the shades of the trees, the air is hotter. The generated will reach the sky to make it hotter and not cold enough for the vaporous water to condense into clouds and rains. The combination of less vaporous water is being brought up to the sky and heat prevents it from forming into clouds and rain is the serious cause of droughts.
How about the floods, are they causing by the heavy rains? Yes, but those rains are not local. They are from the Sea of China and Andaman which often become stormy and monsoon-kind because the seas are overheated and sea water becomes vaporized in massive amount. Without the roots of trees to absorb the rain water, the water becomes overflowing, causing overwhelming floods.
